The ultimate list of Brixham holiday cottages FAQs
Where can I park in Brixham?
Many holiday cottages say that you can park on the roadside, but if you’ve ever driven to Brixham in the summer, you’ll know that that assertion could be setting you up for some serious hassle. In fact, my family makes a point of never driving in Brixham and simply walk, get the bus or a taxi to and from Sainsbury’s in Paignton.
If you do drive to Brixham, a cottage with parking makes things much easier and is not more expensive. I have indicated these properties with a ‘Y’ in the table above. In particular, the cottages and apartments owned by Matthew and Rosie of Sampford House have dedicated parking.
The public long-stay parking option in Brixham include:
- Brixham Central Car Park
- Brixham Marina car park
- Oxen Cove Car Park
- Freshwater Quarry Car Park
Where can I find Brixham winter lets?
If you’re considering relocating to the Torbay area or want to spend time in Brixham in the winter months, a winter let in Brixham is an affordable way to experience what the town has to offer. Many Brixham holiday property owners let out their properties from October to late March on OpenRent and can be contacted directly via that platform. Alternatively, try Gumtree and local estate agents.
What are the best places to visit in Brixham?
Many people spend their week away zipping up and down South Devon. I think you should give your car’s suspension a break and live local during your Brixham holiday cottage stay. Here are some great things I love to do with my family in Brixham:
- Visit St Mary’s Bay
It’s a bit of a trek, but a visit to St Mary’s Bay, a private sheltered cove west of Berry Head is well worth the walk. Read about this beautiful Brixham spot in my article:
Check out St. Mary’s Bay, Brixham, Devon
- Take a dip in Shoalstone Pool
Shoalstone Pool is one of Devon’s natural seawater swimming pools and has to be tried if you visit Brixham between May and September. The 52-meter pool has great views across Torbay. If you visit, don’t forget to donate at least £2.50 per person or £6 per family as it helps the voluntary managers maintain this local treasure.
- Head over to Berry Head
Don’t hesitate to let the southwest coastal path lead you to this magnificent headland, complete with cirl buntings, guillemots, shearwaters, warblers, and redstarts!
- Crabbing at Prince William Quay
Taking my children crabbing by the Quay keeps the occupied for hours. Even though we come up empty there is always a family with a dad that pulls up crab after crab, and you’ll soon be having fun with other local and visiting families.
- Buy a dayrider ticket and explore the Torbay area on the No. 12 bus
One of my favourite things about South Devon is exploring by bus and I heartily encourage you to do the same. The number 12 bus can be caught from the Town Square bus station and will take you across Torbay and as far as Newton Abbot and back again. A dayrider ticket is £5, allowing you to hop on and off as much as you want!
- Can you visit Brixham Fish Market?
Yes! What’s the point of a visit to Fish Town without a tour of the world-famous Brixham Fish Market? The market offers tours where you can see all the hard work that goes in to landing and auctioning the nation’s fresh fish:
You can also head down to Prince William Quay and buy some of the freshest fish in Britain from Brixham’s smallest (but most plucky) trawler, Adela BM79!
Rounding up
As I said, this is a work in progress, fitted in between writing jobs and the mundanities of modern family life. I am updating this page continuously with new finds and recommendations.
